After a wait lasting years, Central Bus Terminal at Thampanoor is finally operational. However, a similar project which was to be inaugurated along with it is still in papers.<\/p>\n
It was in 2004, the government mooted a proposal to develop a greenfield bus terminal at Enchakkal for long-distance services and a new terminal at Thampanoor for short-distance services to reduce the traffic congestion in the city. For this a 5-acres of land was purchased under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme at Enchakkal.<\/p>\n
Now even after 10 years, the Enchakkal project which was modelled on the lines of Chennai and Bangalore is yet to take off. The earmarked land is now being used as an operating centre and parking lot for the low-floor buses.<\/p>\n
Enchakkal terminal was proposed before the Thampanoor Terminal and was touted as a solution to reduce the traffic congestions in the city. It was first mooted to transfer long-distance buses going to Kollam, to Enchakkal so as to free the Thampanoor area. A shuttle service will be conducted frequently between Thampanoor and Enchakkal. Interstate buses will continue to operate from Thampanoor. Meanwhile, East fort will be converted into a heritage zone and only bus stops will be allowed here.<\/p>\n
According to KSRTC officials, the project got stuck due to problems related to land acquisition. Marking the project site as a paddy field by the Environment Department and delay in obtaining an approval from the Airport Authority of India posed problems. The cost estimate for Enchakkal Terminal has shot up to Rs 66 crore from Rs 35 crore.<\/p>\n
Anayara Depot<\/p>\n
KSRTC is now waiting for the 3.5 acres of land belonging to the Agriculture Department which has been given free of cost on a long lease. KSRTC plans to shift operation of buses from the crowded depots to Anayara Depot.<\/p>\n
Government also plans to develop Anayara as a mobility hub. The proposed depot lies close to Technopark, Kochuveli railway station, and the National Waterway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
