Sadly, this is not so for our Trivandrum. It seems that the rest of Kerala doesn’t care much about their capital city and its development.

The MPs and MLA’s outside Trivandrum are bent on hijacking any worthwhile project intended for Trivandrum. For instance, the office of Bureau of Indian Standard functioning at Kesavadasapuram was shifted overnight to Kochi and the attempt to shift the veterinary university allotted for Trivandrum to Wayanad. Kochi (CUSAT, Fisheries, Shri Sankara and NUALS), Thrissur (KAU, Kalamandalam, Veterinary and Health) and Malappuram (Calicut, Malayalam, Ayurveda, Alighar, IFLA) has four universities each. However, Trivandrum has only one university – The Kerala University which was established in 1937 by the Maharajah of Travancore.

The ‘Knowledge City‘ proposed by Sam Pitroda was at first allotted for Trivandrum. Sadly, this project was also sabotaged and moved to some other place. As for the High Court, there is a strong lobby working against establishment of high court bench in Trivandrum.

Trivandrum has been in the receiving end of neglect from the railways for some years now. The only time Trivandrum got its due share was when Shri O Rajagopal became the Minister. During that time, Trivandrum Central railway station was modernized, several additional trains were allotted and Kochu Veli was developed as major station. As far as the development of Trivandrum is concerned, the functioning of the next MPs who represented Trivandrum was quite disappointing to say the least. After stagnating for years, development of Trivandrum received a new lease of life when Dr Sashi Tharoor was elected as the MP from Trivandrum Constituency. His several initiatives for Trivandrum’s development are undeniable. His efforts to bring High Court Bench to Trivandrum, development of Vizhinjam Port, Highway Development and modernization of Trivandrum central station are truly commendable.

The corporation of Trivandrum is a major disappointment as far as its activities are concerned. Mismanagement and inefficiency of the corporation have made the life of Trivandrumites miserable. For instance, the escalating waste disposal issue continues to be a stumbling block, even after three years of Vilappilsala plant’s closure.

Every city needs a good master plan for its future development and growth. Unfortunately the current master plan prepared for Trivandrum is more than two decades old and the new master plan is mired in controversies and its future is uncertain.

Img Source: defence.pk

Every day we hear about grandiose plans and projects claiming to change the face of the capital in the immediate future. Yet after the hype dies down, there will be no trace of the announced projects like the INKEL’s Pod car project and modern shopping mall at Palayam and so on. I think it’s better to dissolve the City Corporation and put all capital cities under Central Government and create a ‘State Capital Region’ for the smooth development.

Now with the elections around the corner, there are promises galore from all the competing candidates.
