State Suchitwa Mission has put forward a proposal to rag pickers and private agencies to collect plastic waste from the Corporation limit.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new scheme rag-pickers will reach door-to-door in neat uniforms and badges to collect plastic and electronic waste tossed out after use. Currently, there is no efficient way to transport collected waste. Suchitwa Mission will connect them with vendors in Tamil Nadu to collect the waste out of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Kudumbashree Mission has collaborated with a Bangalore-based firm to collect plastic and e-waste. The collected e-waste will be handed over to a central government-approved agency. To get sufficient quantity, waste has to be collected from 5,000 houses i.e. six tonnes of e-waste. However, the present clientele is only just 250 houses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>E-waste include discarded computer monitors, motherboards, cathode ray tubes, mobile phones, chargers, CDs, headphones, LCD\/plasma TVs, AC, refrigerators\u00a0 and all other electronic devices.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When the e-waste is burnt to recover copper and other precious metal, over 1,000 toxic substances are released which contaminate soil and ground water.
