Indiscriminate parking of buses causing traffic blocks is a common scene at East Fort. Some 4,000-5,000 vehicles ply per hour and an equal number of pedestrians jostle for space on the Overbridge-East Fort stretch. According to NATPAC, 25% of the mishaps taking place on the stretch involve pedestrians as victims. The encroachment of footpaths and bus stands by street vendors are forcing pedestrians to walk on the road.

To decongest East Fort area, Trida has made big plans to shift the bus terminal in East Fort to Attakulangara. The plan was to construct a three-storey commercial complex and a bus shelter on the 2 acres of land on the sprawling 5.5 acre campus of the 125-year-old Government Central School at Attakulangara. The project includes construction of a bus stand, parking lots, shopping complex, comfort station etc.

The plan to shift the bus terminal in East Fort to Attakulangara has been stalled by the members of ‘Tree Walk’ an informal venture of tree lovers in the city

However, the project has been stalled by the members of ‘Tree Walk’ an informal venture of tree lovers in the city. In a signed petition to the Chief Minister, they demanded the State government to scrap the project. The alternate sites suggested by the Tree-walk include the five-acre area acquired by TRIDA on the Attakulangara-Killipalam bypass which is currently being used as a waste dump. But the authorities are yet to take a decision on this matter.

There is a serious need for the authorities to look into the matter as such kind of road accidents are increasing day in and out in our city. Who is responsible for road accidents? Is it because of the road conditions or due to the mindset of the people who are selfish and never bothered about the traffic rules?

Do you agree with Tree-Walk or are you against them?
