Those who had dismissed the idea of virtual reality becoming a reality were not so sure anymore, and suddenly, it was trending.

India, I propose, should get on the bandwagon especially with the new government coming into power and the chanting of “India is getting Modified”. If we step into this rising sector, just think about the jobs it would produce! Jobs- that’s what the youngest population was actually voting for, wasn’t it?

If we do enter the industry, we should definitely tap the gaming market. That’s where the money is. In fact, we have a lot of scope there in terms of ideas. I actually already have a game idea in mind: “The Great Indian Virtual Reality Game”. The game would be a mixture of popular games from Resident Evil to Assassin’s Creed. The objective of the player would of course be to get from point A to point B, overcoming obstacles. Obstacles would include horrific things like blinders, clickers, soul suckers, flesh eaters, and worst yet, the blockers. The player would lose a bit of their life when they fall victim to one of the obstacles. The game is highly inspired from real life. Yes, highly inspired.

Take a closer look.

In reality, the player is female, any age.

She would be trying to go somewhere be it home, work, school, etc.

The obstacles would be actual people. Blinders would be the flashers, clickers would be the self-proclaimed paparazzi of non-celebrities, soul suckers would be the guys who stare and stare and stare, the flesh eaters would be the rapists and the list goes on.

This is unfortunately “The Great Indian Virtual Reality Game” for the female gender with overdue gratitude to the male population of India.

If you’re a guy, quickly jumping to defence, saying, “Not all men!” Listen, you’re a part of the problem. You are the blocker. Don’t believe me? Alright, let’s take a look at an imagined scenario.

Say for example your sister/girlfriend/wife/daughter/mother comes up to you and asks, “Can I g-

Hold up! Did she just ask? If she’s asking permission, do you really think that’s equality? She should be having a dialogue with you. She should be expressing her thoughts, which you can either agree or disagree with. That is equality. Cue the whines and abuse from the protectors of Indian culture. Before they start on the “daughter” aspect of the aforementioned, let me clarify. As for your not yet legal daughter, when you tell her “no”, ask yourself why you’re saying no, is it really for her safety or is it for tradition, culture or what society will think of you? Will you be her blocker?

They offer many sweet words, but no jobs.

The blockers, I must say, are the worst. And they’re not just men. They’re women too. They’re the ones who say no. They’re the ones who block our opportunities. They deny us at our young age education, economic freedom, and offer us marriage instead. They tell us we were asking for it because of our clothes, our way of talking. They withhold jobs. One of my good friends wants to be a photo journalist. However, there are not a lot of female photo journalists in Kerala. People look at her with wonder and curiosity seeing her camera. When it comes to interviews, they are impressed by her passion. They offer many sweet words, but no jobs.

Society has conditioned us so and we as a whole need a thorough cleansing. But we won’t change, well, not until something so horrendous happens to us or someone close to us

And no matter how righteous we proclaim we are, we too fall victim to becoming a blocker ourselves. The words, thoughts slip out before we can even process them: “Why was she out so late?” “Her jeans are too tight.” “Look at her flirt with those guys, what a slut.” “How can she just abandon her kids and go abroad?” “She should learn to forgive her husband.” “How can she return to cinema at her age?” We just can’t seem to help it, can we? Society has conditioned us so and we as a whole need a thorough cleansing. But we won’t change, well, not until something so horrendous happens to us or someone close to us…

I usually don’t mind celebrity tweets or statuses, but the words of Vineeth Sreenivasan come to mind. If men could, like the saying goes, walk a mile in our shoes. What a revolution would it create! And that’s why India should join- but virtual reality will probably take some time to gain momentum, won’t it? My sisters can’t wait that long.
