Google calls Android L as the “most ambitious Android release” yet. Android L brings sweeping changes to Android’s UI, performance and security enhancements and a slew of new user-facing features.

Here are some of the interesting features that you will see in Android L, set to launch later this year.

1. Material Design

Android L gives the OS a serious face-lift since 2011’s Ice Cream Sandwich release. The new version is flatter, more colourful and multi-layered, with new visual flourishes to respond to your touch. It adds more animations, shadows and white spaces in apps, making the objects you interact appear as though they are floating above the screen. The on-screen navigation keys will also get a whole new look.

2. Smart Multitasking

The multitasking menu of Android will get a 3D look with the next update. The open apps will be shown as overlapping cards. The 3D effect is generated with the help of “shadows and perspectives”. Android L’s new 3D effect multitasking panel also treats Chrome tabs as separate cards. That means flicking between apps and WebPages becomes a seamless transition.

3. Enhanced notifications

Notifications on Android L will appear like Google Now cards and will be accessible right from the lock screen on Android devices. User will be able to open, read and dismiss notifications without unlocking their device. There is also a “Heads-up” notification where new notifications pop-up on top of the screen, irrespective of the app is running at that time.

4. Better Battery Life

Android L introduces a new feature called Project Volta which has the sole focus on improving battery life. Using Project Volta, Android L will automatically switch off services that are not crucial such reducing brightness, cranking down data connections and app syncing etc. Users will be able to see more battery life information on screen, letting them pinpoint possible causes of battery drain.

5. Enhanced Security

L devices equipped with a kill-switch that enables users to remotely reset their smartphone

Android L devices come with a kill-switch that enables users to remotely reset their smartphone or tablet in case it is stolen. You can even choose to have your device automatically unlock if it recognises that it’s in a secure situation. In Secret mode, the phone will not show any notifications on the lock screen.

6. 64-bit CPU support

Android L will support 64-bit processors, meaning memory constraints are now lifted and Android devices will be able to make full use of the available RAM. Chipmakers Nvidia and Qualcomm are bringing Android L support to its 64-bit chips, which will be in mobile devices later this year.

That’s just scratching the surface for now. Android L sports many other exciting features such as better app and web integration, efficient ART compiler that boosts speeds two times faster, PC-like graphics on mobile, powerful search, Google Fit and much more.

Google unveiled Android L, the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, at the Google I/O 2014 conference.
