It was confirmed for two children in the coastal village of Puthiyathura. A case of cholera has been detected in the State after an interval of 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>A large group of health department officials have camped in the Puthiyathura locality. They have stated that the situation is under control. El Tor strain of the bacterium <strong>Vibrio Cholerae<\/strong> was found to be the causative agent in the cases reported here. This type of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cholera\" target=\"_blank\">cholera<\/a> is believed to be comparatively less dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason cited for the recurrence of the disease is unhygienic conditions of the coastal areas. The condition of public toilets are totally miserable in the area. The water used by the people in these areas were found to be contaminated.<\/p>\n<p>Cholera is a severe infectious intestinal disease. In most cases, the infection is mild and does not even show any symptoms. But sometimes it severely affects the diseased. Severe cholera is detected in 1 in 20 infected persons. Profuse watery diarrhea,vomiting and leg cramps are the general symptoms experienced. This can lead to dehydration and without proper treatment it can also lead to death within hours.<\/p>\n<p>A person gets cholera by both\u00a0 water and food contaminated by the cholera bacterium. Food and water contaminated by the feces of an infected person is one of the major sources of \u00a0spreading this disease. Inadequate sewage and drinking water facilities can promote the spread of this malady.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dehydration<\/strong> is the major problem faced by people ailing from cholera. The best treatment for this is to supplement the body with enough liquids and salts to compensate for the loss. Oral rehydration solution. If rehydration is provided in time,less than 1% of the patients die.<\/p>\n<h3>Prevention is always better than cure. So here are some tips to stay free off the sickness:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>As much as possible, drink only boiled or bottled water.<\/li>\n<li>Try not to use \u00a0ice in \u00a0drinks.<\/li>\n<li>Wash your hands properly with soap and clean water.<\/li>\n<li>Consume only properly cooked food and vegetables. Try to eat dishes when they are hot.<\/li>\n<li>Do not eat rare and undercooked meat.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose off \u00a0feces in a sanitary fashion to prevent contamination of water and food sources.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid eating food from street vendors.<\/li>\n<li>Always \u00a0use cloth filters or other filters at home.<\/li>\n<li>The sewage of the house should not be mixed with the drinking water.<\/li>\n<li>Cholera can also be prevented by means of vaccinations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As far as possible, try to take these precautions. Though <a href=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/tag\/kerala\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kerala<\/a> has stayed free of Cholera for the past 5 years,its re emergence emphasizes the need of having enough sanitary facilities State wide. Proper drinking water and sewage should be provided to the people.
