#EnteThiruvananthapuram:<\/strong><\/em> The recent floods in Srinagar, which has severely affected the functioning of both the government and the disaster management, have come as a wake-up call to Kerala government.<\/p>\n

Kerala’s disaster management unit, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has decided to set up a new State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Trivandrum.<\/p>\n

The emergency operation centre will be constructed at a hill-top adjacent to Kanakakkunnu Palace, which is also the highest point in the city. The new State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) will be constructed by the Habitat group and the work is expected to be completed in 18 months.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The centre will designed to withstand any natural calamities and will continue to operate up to a week, even if Trivandrum is cut off from the rest of the country. Since ground based communication systems are prone to failure during disasters, VSAT, a satellite based internet service will be established at the centre. Already 35 personnel have been trained to handle various communication systems in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n

Another feature that will be established at the SOEC is the i2 system which provides analysis of big data and helps in decision making and sharing of information with various organisations at different levels to co-ordinate relief and rescue operations. The i2 system was used in the recent World Cup Football in Brazil as part of its disaster management plan.<\/p>\n
