Currently pond contains 35lac litres of water. The study was conducted by using underwater cameras and other sophisticated devices.

The revival project will be undertaken without damaging the heritage building. First the water will be pumped out then all the mud will be removed. The cleaning project is expected to be completed before the rainy season. In 2007, a project was carried out to improve the water quality.

Padmatheertham has a self-flushing mechanism by bringing in water from the Kochar, a tributary of the Killi River constructed during the Travancore era. The excess water was then diverted to the nearby Pathrakulam from where it was redirected to the Thekkanamkara canal. The self flushing system helped to maintain the level and quality of the water in the pond.

Over time, Kochar canal was blocked by encroachments and the failure of the flushing mechanism led to stagnation, affecting the water quality.

The Padmatheertham pond of Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of the oldest water bodies in the city, is awaiting a new lease of life.
