Roads in the city are getting an urgent facelift ahead of the 35th National Games<\/a> which is to be held from January 31st to February 14.<\/p>\n

PWD has started repairing 22km of road Kazhakkoottam. These roads have been dilapidated for months. Old electric lines are being replaced with underground cables. \u00a0Another main stretch that is being repaired is the stretch from Veli Bridge to Menamkulam. As Games Village is situated at Menamkulam, repairing of the Veli – Menamkulam road will enable easy access for the sportspersons to reach the games village. The road is being developed at a uniform width of 7 metres. An amount of Rs15 crore has been set aside for the repair and surfacing of the stretch.<\/p>\n

As the construction of the International stadium at Kariavattom is nearing completion, roads around it are also undergoing major makeover.\u00a0 PWD will also develop a road around the Greenfield stadium. Earlier Kerala University refused to give-up this stretch of land that borders the stadium for widening works. But last week, KU has agreed to give up one acre for widening the existing small road surrounding the stadium into a 6-metre wide road.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the construction of Rail-over-bridge (ROB) is nearing completion and only 10-15 % of work remains at the ROB. The ROB is constructed at a cost of Rs45 crore of which Rs32 crore will be given by the NH wing of PWD. NH is constructing 13 spans each having a length of 35 meters while the Railway is constructing a span of 30 metres over the railway line.<\/p>\n
