{"id":21598,"date":"2014-12-02T17:27:38","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T11:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/?p=21598"},"modified":"2014-12-02T17:27:38","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T11:57:38","slug":"narrow-city-roads-a-hurdle-for-light-metro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/narrow-city-roads-a-hurdle-for-light-metro\/","title":{"rendered":"Narrow city roads a hurdle for Light Metro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though the ambitious <a href=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/light-metro-trivandrum-and-kozhikode\/\" target=\"_blank\">light metro rail project<\/a> being proposed in Trivandrum and Kozhikode is waiting for approval from the financial department, the width of city roads is posing as a hurdle to the project.<\/p>\n<p>In order to accommodate pillars for the light metro, the medians in the city roads have to be increased 10 times the current width. The median from Kesavadasapuram to Thampanoor (MG Road), which has only 30cm width, have to be widened to 2.5m to 3m as per the standard specification for light metro mentioned in the DPR. Widening of the existing medians to 10 times its current width will further shrink the road, thus increasing the traffic congestions in the city.<\/p>\n<p>According to DPR, the light metro viaduct will be carried on single columns located at 30-metre distance. Generally circular piers of 1.60m diametres are provided on aesthetics considerations. However around 8m width of road will be required during piling and open foundation work.<\/p>\n<p>Natpac recommended a median width of 2.5m to 3m which can accommodate the columns of light metro. While widening of Kazhakkoottam-Kesavadasapuram stretch from the existing 10m to 21m is yet to take off, the already widened stretch from Kesavadasapuram to Thampanoor may get narrower with the proposed change. Fortunately, widening of the stretch from Technocity to Kazhakkoottam will be carried out in 45 metres by the NHAI.<\/p>\n<p>According to a traffic study report published by Natpac the vehicle population in the district has increased 2.5 times during the last 9 years. The study which was conducted in 2009 says that peak hour traffic in areas such as PMG, Thampanoor, etc was between 4,000 and 5,000 PCU (passenger car unit).
