City traffic police will soon install e-tag stickers to all prepaid auto- rickshaws operating in the city. Mayor K Chandrika, chairman of City Traffic Advisory Committee controlling the prepaid rickshaw counters in the city, has given in-principle nod to the traffic police’s proposal.<\/p>\n
The e-tag stickers will enable authorities to keep a tab on the vehicles more effectively. The traffic police have already started preparations to implement the e-tag sticker. The initiative will be first implemented at the prepaid counter at Trivandrum central railway station which is also the largest counter in the city in terms of the number of rickshaws.<\/p>\n
The e-tag stickers are Radio Frequency ID (RFID) cards in which contain all the information regarding the concurrent vehicle would be encoded. An RFID card reader would be installed at the prepaid counter to read data of the vehicle.<\/p>\n
E-tag system will enable faster dispense of vehicles hired at the counter and would benefit both commuters and authorities. When an auto-rickshaw comes up at the prepaid counter, the RFID reader will read all details regarding the vehicle, including its registration number from the e-tag. Then the vehicle would be automatically entered on the automated billing system, saving considerable amount of time. “At present, two men handle all this work, one shouting out the vehicle number and the other one writing it down” said M R Satheesh Kumar, circle inspector of traffic (south), to TOI.<\/p>\n
