The Welfare wing of the City Corporation is planning a project to build night shelters in the city for migrant labourers. The decision to build night shelters came after the Urban Affairs Department proposed a project for night shelters, to be implemented in five municipal corporations as part of the State Budget of 2014-15.<\/p>\n
The state government will provide Rs.30 lakh to the project and the rest will have to be taken from the Corporation\u2019s fund.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Trivandrum Corporation is yet to find a suitable spot for building the night shelters. \u201cWe have enough space in the coastal wards, but there is not much use in building it there as most of the migrant workers are concentrated within the city in construction sites. The proper location has to be identified first,\u201d said Welfare Standing Committee chairperson Palayam Rajan to The Hindu.<\/p>\n
Migrant workers can avail night shelter by paying a nominal rent amount. Beneficiaries who are not able to even pay the initial amount can pay it on instalments. Each shelter will have a community kitchen and toilet facilities.<\/p>\n
Migrant labours in the city live in camps attached to construction sites. In the recent raids the camps were found to be maintained under deplorable conditions without adequate toilet facilities.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Kerala State Housing Project is coming up with a similar project in which it plans to build small houses for those who work as housemaids in the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
