NHAI officials have approached the social forestry department’s ‘Tree Protection Committee’ to cut down the trees on the NH By-pass as part of widening the stretch. The proposal is now pending before the Tree Protection Committee.<\/p>\n

The NHAI and Tree Protection Committee (TPC) would conduct a joint inspection to find the number of trees that would have to be felled to facilitate the widening works. Tree Protection Committee is against the axing of trees on the Kazhakoottam-Mukkola stretch.<\/p>\n

The land for widening the stretch was acquired more than 30 years ago, and more trees might have come up there since then.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

NHAI officials said that, in order to develop the NH into a 4-lane some trees have to be cut. NHAI also said that these trees on the stretch had started blooming only recently. The exact number of trees that will be axed is yet to be divulged. Meanwhile, Tree-Walk Trivandrum<\/a>, a group of nature lovers in the capital city have come forward against axing of the trees. The group is also gearing up for campaigns to protect the trees.<\/p>\n

Most people in the city agree that the road needs to be widened urgently and the viable option is to plant trees along the side of the new alignment. That way, when the road gets completed, there will be a new green corridor along the stretch.<\/p>\n
