In a state where land acquisition is a contentious issue, people of Attingal have set a unique model for Kerala.\u00a0 42 families in Attingal town along with some other establishments have agreed to surrender around 1.13 acres<\/strong> of land worth more than Rs 10 crore free of cost for the NH road widening project.<\/p>\n

It’s a decision that involves financial loss to land owners but none of them opposed the project.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The move has given a major boost to Kerala’s development agenda. Most projects proposed for the state are affected by land acquisition cost, which is around 10 times the construction cost.<\/p>\n

“We have decided to make the Attingal model an example across the state. And whoever comes forward for similar initiatives would be given priority. The government is ready to consider such models across the state<\/em>,\u201d said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.<\/p>\n

Land owners on both sides of the road, about 42 families, along with Attingal Municipality, Civil Station and some other establishments, are voluntarily giving land without taking any compensation.<\/p>\n

“Government should give exemption to these land owners from the Municipal Building Rules for further construction in their land.<\/em>” said Attingal Municipality chairperson Advocate S Kumari to IE.<\/p>\n

As per the proposal, the 3.06-km<\/strong> stretch from Moonnumukku to Poovanbara, which is currently a narrow stretch, will be developed at a width of 20 metres. The total project is expected to cost at least Rs15 crores<\/strong>. Rs 8.5 cores will be needed for the construction of water drainage system on the both sides. Electric lines, TV and phone cables, water connections and other utility lines will be realigned or relocated.<\/p>\n

When the road widening is completed, it will put an end to the traffic woes in the area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
