{"id":21959,"date":"2015-01-01T16:42:10","date_gmt":"2015-01-01T11:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/?p=21959"},"modified":"2015-01-01T16:42:10","modified_gmt":"2015-01-01T11:12:10","slug":"historic-ts-canal-from-anchuthengu-kayal-to-nadayara-kayal-to-be-revived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/historic-ts-canal-from-anchuthengu-kayal-to-nadayara-kayal-to-be-revived\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic TS-Canal from Anchuthengu Kayal to Nadayara Kayal to be revived"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The revival of the historic waterway from Anchuthengu Kayal to Nadayara Kayal has received technical approval.<\/p>\n<p>Technical approval has been given after the technical sanction committee convened by the Additional Chief Secretary (Water Resources, Coastal Shipping and Inland Navigation) recommended the proposal submitted by the Chief Engineer (Irrigation and Administration) in August and September.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21963 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1-666x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel 1\" width=\"666\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1-666x513.jpg 666w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As per the proposal, a <strong>14-metre wide<\/strong>, two-metre deep waterway will be created on the 12.7-km stretch for the boats to pass. Concrete lining provided between 1934 and 1942 has peeled off at several places. Also, the two tunnels at Varkala in Reach-II from Thazhevettoor to Ramanthalay will be revived and developed at a cost<strong> Rs 19 crore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21964 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2-638x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel 2\" width=\"638\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2-638x513.jpg 638w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In august last year, a sum of <strong>Rs.27.5 crore<\/strong> was sanctioned for the revival of two tunnels in Reach II at Rs.19.5 crore and two tunnels in Reach III (Ramanthalay to Sivagiri) at Rs.8 crore. But government gave technical nod only for Rs.19 crore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21962 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-659x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel\" width=\"659\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-659x513.jpg 659w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With this, the efforts to make the 722-metre Sivagiri tunnel, the 350-metre Chilakoor tunnel, and the 12.7-km waterways navigable have gathered momentum again. The tunnels and the 12.7-km waterways are part of the 60.5-km Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam section of the <strong>560km Thiruvananthapuram &#8211; Shoranur canal (TS-Canal)<\/strong>.
