A recent study on the radiation level from mobile phone towers shows that the radiation level is alarmingly high in certain areas of Kochi and Trivandrum.<\/p>\n
In Trivandrum, highest levels of radiation pollution were found on Perurkkada, Statue Junction and Babuji Nagar. While in Kochi Vyttila, Kakkanad, Palarivattom and Edappally top the pollution list.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The study was conducted under the aegis of the Swadeshi Science Movement and it recommended that no more rooftop cell phone towers be installed in both the cities.<\/p>\n
A cell phone has a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) which measures the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a electromagnetic waves. SAR-1 means that one watt of radiation from the hand set is absorbed by 1.5 kg of brain in six minutes. The safety limit stipulated by the International Commission for Non-ionising Radiation Protection (ICNRP) is less than 92 lakh micro-watts, and India has stipulated the limit as 45 lakh micro-watts.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0 radiation levels in each area was categorised\u00a0 into three groups – less than 30 dBm, 15-30 dBm and more than 15 dBm.\u00a0 First category is considered safe and the second category suggests caution. The third category means danger.<\/p>\n
Almost 90% of Kochi falls under the second category and certain important areas are showing red, indicating danger level.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Swadeshi Science Movement also conducted public meetings in Kochi and Trivandrum where residents reported discomforts due to radiation.<\/p>\n
The study also suggested some remedial measures to bring down the radiation levels such as restricting availability of handsets to those with SAR values less than 1.6; not allowing mobile towers within 400 metres of schools, residential areas and hospitals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
