It seems like Trivandrumites will have to wait until April to see the planetarium re-open.

According to officials, technical snags have forced the KSSTM to drop the original design of the new, state-of-the-art dome and to come with an entirely new one. The plan was to inaugurate the renovated planetarium this month.

As per the original design, 48 poles had to be angled at precisely 15 degrees to hold up the dome. Any slight variation could result in distortion of the images displayed on the dome. However, it was found that the floor will not bear the weight of the entire structure. KSSTM officials are looking for alternative designs which are suitable to our conditions.

KSSTM has roped in German company Carl Zeiss for supplying the dome which is a seamless, tilted one. The dome has a diameter of 17 metres and weighs 3.5 tonnes. It will have a screen quality equivalent to IMAX. Carl Zeiss will arrive to supervise the erection of the dome.

The current starship projector and the dome were installed in 1987. This is a technology that’s over 25 years old and the Japan based GOTO Company, manufacturer of the current projector had ceased producing spare parts for it a few years ago.

When the renovation project is completed, the Priyadarshini Planetarium will become the best planetarium in India. The planetarium officially opened to the public in 1994.

Priyadarshini Planetarium at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum (KSSTM) has been closed down for renovation for almost a year.
