According to B.Pradeep, the Superintendent of the prison, the solar energy system has a capacity of 129 kilowatts. This will light up the prison compound and 2 blocks of the prison. Fans in a block, kitchen activities and pumping of water can also be powered with the system. Rs 7.98 crore was spent to implement this system.

The prison superintendent also suggested that since the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) power consumption by the prison is literally nil, the saved energy can be supplied to the public. The prisons department is the first department to set up solar energy systems in the State. It might also probably be the first time in the country that a department is becoming completely green.

In the next phase, prisons of Kozhikode and Thrissur will be solar powered. This will then be extended to other districts too. The cost of solar powering the prisons was Rs 25.5 crore. This was taken from the Rs 52 crore allotted to State Prisons by the 13th finance commission.

Kerala with a large population of 33,387,677 is largely dependent on hydroelectric power. Till recently, this was not much of a problem. But now the monsoon has been showing a slight change in pattern and has become unpredictable it has had a direct impact on the power supply of the State and has forced the government to implement load shedding. Currently, availability of water in the reservoirs is 65 per cent less when compared to the statistics of the previous year. Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed has said that by 2020, a day’s power demand will reach 6000 megawatts. Of this, the State would only be able to contribute 2000 megawatts.

Therefore turning to solar power is taking the right step ahead. Solar powering the Prisons of the State will surely reduce the burden on KSEB. More non conventional energy projects should be tailored, so that Kerala would not have to travel in this power shortage circuit again.

When the whole of Kerala gets plunged into darkness cyclically for half an hour daily, Poojappura prison escapes it as solar powered systems has been installed in the Central Prison.
