However, a survey report prepared by Ahmedabad-based NGO Humane Society International (HSI) says that stray dogs are hardly a trouble for capital city. The report which will be released soon say that Trivandrum has one of the lowest dog-to-man ratios across the country.<\/p>\n
According to the first-ever authenticated survey, city with a total population of 9,57,730 has an estimated stray dog population of 5,380<\/strong> which translates to one stray dog for every 178 people. \u00a0Surprisingly, the health wing of the city corporation puts an approximate dog population figures between 50,000-60,000<\/strong> and has expressed doubts over the survey report.<\/p>\n
The survey also states that, even though the density of roaming dogs in the city is low, high percentage of lactating females demands urgent need for sterilization. Pettah has the highest dog density followed by Kadakampally.<\/p>\n
The survey shows the distribution of dogs in 16 villages. But it\u2019s unclear whether it has covered a certain number of wards in each village. The survey was therefore designed to estimate the roaming dog abundance in each of those sixteen regions. Also HSI didn’t know how many wards came under each village. Wards in the coastal areas were also excluded from the survey.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile HSI said that they used the same method employed in 12 other cities during the last six years. “We were also surprised by the figures, but we repeated the survey along each track to determine if there are more dogs in the evenings. However, the figures remained more or less the same,” said\u00a0 Amit Chowdhary, HSI head to TOI.<\/p>\n
The main victims of the canine threat are morning and evening walkers, pedestrians, newspapermen and milkmen riding bikes, and students who commute on foot to schools and tuition centres, especially in the morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
