Almost two years has passed since Railway first proposed the Trivandrum-Cheganoor Suburban Rail Corridor. Although government has given the green signal for the rail corridor, the project is yet to materialize.<\/p>\n
Now all hopes are pinned on the Railway budget which is to be presented on Thursday, to make the long-pending suburban rail corridor a reality.<\/p>\n
If the reports are true, Indian Railways is planning to form Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) with states to implement similar projects.\u00a0 The finance ministry has already promised funding for the project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 3,055 crore<\/strong> in the initial phase.<\/p>\n \u201cThe state government is in constant touch with the centre and the Chief Minister has written two letters to the Prime Minister\u2019s Office (PMO) and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu recently to consider the suburban rail. We expect a favourable announcement in this year\u2019s budget,\u201d said Biju Prabhakar, Thiruvananthapuram district collector to Deccan Chronicle.<\/p>\n Once the project gets the green signal from the Railways, the state government will provide funds to the Indian Railways to execute the project. It will take at least six months<\/strong> for the state government to raise the fund.<\/p>\n Trivandrum-Cheganoor Suburban\u00a0Rail Corridor was mooted by Trivandrum Railway Division in order to ease the hardships faced by the ever increasing number of commuters to and from Trivandrum.
