Hopes for the Vizhinjam Port have once again brightened as the Centre agreed to consider state government\u2019s request for relaxation in Cabotage Law for the proposed Vizhinjam International Harbour project.<\/p>\n

Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari has given his assurance that the Vizhinjam container transshipment terminal project would be granted cabotage relaxation.\u00a0 Gadkari informed the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that he would talk with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on it. Chief Minister also said that the cabotage relaxation for Vizhinjam will be similar to the one granted to the Vallarpadom ICTT project.<\/p>\n

The cabotage regulation, which forms Section 407 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, prevents foreign ships from engaging in the coasting trade except under a licence granted by the Director General of Shipping.<\/p>\n

Essar Ports, Adani Ports, and a consortium of Srei and OHL will be invited to the meeting.<\/p>\n
