The canal will be widened and box culverts will be installed on either side of the canal from Ponnara Park – Indian Coffee House stretch. This will help to channel the flood water to the Pazhavangady canal.

The work was stalled for over 9 months as Indian Coffee House and KSUDP got into a dispute over the project. Indian Coffee House wants the restaurant to be open during the widening work while the KSUDP officials wants to close down the restaurant temporarily as it causes serious safety issues. As per the DPR, the canal needs to be widened to 6 metres at the place where the ICH is located. The canal will be 3 metres deep. The work area could extend up to 1.5 metres close to the foundation of the ICH.

Meanwhile, KSUDP has decided to withhold the second phase of works which include construction of a diversion canal from Thampanoor railway culvert to the Vanchiyoor portion of the Pazhavangady canal. It was proposed to avoid flooding in the Pazhavangady Temple Junction, East Fort and a portion of the SS Kovil Road.

The Rs 14-crore flood prevention project was proposed after a heavy rain on 2013 which flooded Thampanoor and nearby parts. Since 2014, the area has not witnessed any water-logging. This is mainly due to the huge storm drain built as part of the project.

The first phase of the flood mitigation project currently carried out at Thampanoor will be completed by month-end.
