It’s just a few weeks into the summer and we are sweating it out already. This week, Palakkad recorded the highest maximum temperature of the season – 39 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, the Met department has predicted that there will be summer showers in the first week of April. Meanwhile here are some tips to stay cool during this summer.

Here are 9 ways to beat this summer!

1. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is a must during this season. During summer, your body loses maximum amount of water through perspiration. Make sure that you drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Other cold beverages and sports drinks rich with electrolytes can also help replace minerals and cool down the body temperature at any time. But stay away from synthetic drinks such as colas.

2. Eat Fruits

Binge on fruits like watermelon, grapefruit, pineapple, pears and other citrus fruits that are cooling and have high water content. You can also carry a box of fruit salad to work and have it as a mid-day snack. This will ensure you get the maximum nutrients from these fruits. If possible have a glass of fruit juice with your breakfast daily.

3. Dress Lightly

Tight and dark-colored synthetic fabrics tend to trap heat. When outside, it’s best to cover yourself up with loose-fitting clothing which provide plenty of aeration. It is also said that light-colored clothing reflects heat and help the body to maintain normal temperatures.

4. Eat light

Foods that take long to digest will slow down your body’s cooling process. Your body needs more water for digestion. It’s better to avoid fried and heavy foods during the summer. Include salads made from tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, spinach and beans on your daily diet.

5. Hit the shower

There’s nothing like a cold shower on a summer’s day. Anything that puts water in touch with your skin cools you down because that water evaporates, which simulates sweating. In fact, you could indulge in two or three showers to cool off but don’t towel off completely—then relax by a fan. Using a cooling shower gel will leave you a tingly fresh feeling.

6. Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen helps to prevent sunburn and blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Apart from this it helps to soothe, lubricate and moisturize the skin. Typically, Indians don’t use sunscreen on a regular basis. But it’s okay to use sunscreen lotions during summer before you step out and keep re-applying every 3-4 hours. Choose a sunscreen that suits your skin.

7. Make sure your windows are open

Even during summer, the nights are cooler than the day time. By leaving your windows open during the night, you will be enabling the cooler night air to enter your home and dissipate the accumulated heat. This will mean that your home will be significantly cooler in the summer months.

8. Limit sun exposure

Stay indoors as far as possible. Those who work under direct sun should take rest under the shade at regular intervals and drink lots of water frequently. Afternoon sun is the most damaging to your skin. The 11 to 3pm sun is the worst and can even cause a heat stroke. Using an umbrella or wearing eye gear will help to a great extent.

9. Choose cotton bedding

Many of us have trouble sleeping during a hot summer day. Use cotton sheets for your bed and totally avoid synthetic cloths. Cotton is a breathable fiber that lets air circulate. So your body heat can dissipate to the surface and sweat can evaporate.

Well, these are the proven and effective methods to beat the summer heat. Have some of your own tips for keeping cool in the summer? Let’s hear them in the comments.

Pro-tip: If you tried everything and still find the summer heat unbearable, try going to a movie or to a nearby shopping centre/mall and use their A/C. Its okay you don’t have to buy anything, just linger around and pretend you’re there to buy something. Maybe if you are lucky you will get free Wi-Fi too. ;)

Or

You can buy an A/c, if you’re okay with the hefty electricity bill. Well that was obvious wasn’t it?

Kerala is in the grip of summer season and the mercury levels are rising.
