Soon all autos with legal city permits will be painted in yellow starting from November 1. The move to bring in a colour code is to differentiate auto-rickshaws with permit and those without one.<\/p>\n
The decision was finalized in the regional transport authority (RTA) meeting convened by District Collector Biju Prabhakar. As per the decision, the autos with permit should be painted yellow in the front. The owners would be given 6 months to implement the colour code.<\/p>\n
The authorities believe the decision will also help to reduce traffic congestion and to encourage public transport facilities, once standard colour code is maintained for autos with legal permit.\u00a0 \u201cAll those autos without permit will be easily identified. This could considerably decrease the number of autos in the city and people will turn towards public transport system,”<\/em> said Biju Prabhakar.<\/p>\n According to the data nearly 50,000 autos ply in the city<\/strong>. What’s interesting is that, not even half of these autos have got the city permit which allows them to operate inside the city.\u00a0 The traffic police says that there has been an unprecedented influx of autos from rural areas like Nedumangadu, Parassala, Neyyatinkara, Vattapara, Pothencode and Vembayam in the city. These illegal autos come to the city in the morning, ply till evening and then return to their home towns. These autos hardly use fare meters and often behave indecently with the commuters. They don\u2019t even fall under any of the unions and remain free of all regulations.<\/p>\n The auto unions have also welcomed the new decision as the move will benefit them in the long run.<\/p>\n Earlier the Trivandrum City Corporation issued ID Cards and separate numbers for autorickshaws with valid permits.
