Multi-crore rupee Vizhinjam is one step closer to becoming a reality. Empowered Committee Presided by Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson recommended to accept the tender submitted by Adani Ports for the development of the port.<\/p>\n
With Empowered Committee submitting its recommendation, the matter would now be considered by the Vizhinjam Seaport International Ltd (VSIL) board chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on May 13. Once the Board give its nod, the project would be forwarded to state cabinet for approval, official sources said.<\/p>\n

The Ahmedabad-based Adani Group, was the only company which had put in the bid on April 24. Adani Group also sought a grant of Rs16.35bn from the central and state governments for the project. If the company gets the project, the group will build port superstructure and operate the port for a period of 40 years. The state will take up construction of the breakwater and the fishing harbour.<\/p>\n

The project had faced hurdles recently with no company submitting final bid for taking up the contract for its construction and operation when last date for bidding ended in February last, even though five companies expressed interest for the project.<\/p>\n
