These variety of personalities make our Trivandrum so special.

So we have compiled a list of the 9 types of people you are most likely to meet in the capital.

1. Freakers

If you happen pass by Manaveeyam road you can see Freakers in their natural habitat taking selfies or photos for their Facebook profile. It’s an important ritual of their daily lives as they need Facebook likes and comments in order to survive. Don’t be put offby their fluorescent coloured dress or the unusual hairstyles, Freakers are generally harmless creatures. But it’s advised not to spook them.

2. The Wanna-be politician

You can see these guys strolling near the Secretariat- Statue area. They invariably wear starched white Khaddarshirts with a golden pen and a black diary in their front pocket. At first you might think they are some high-profile politician or a close friend of the CM. But don’t let the looks fool you. They may belong to some local party which we have never heard of or maybe the minions of some chota netas. And it will probably be their first time in Trivandrum.

3. The real politicians

These people are your ministers and MLA’s. Their cavalcades charge through the city roads at break-neck speedsusing loud siren to scare off the people. If you see them on your rear-view mirror pull your vehicle to the side or else be prepared to hear some choicest abuse from the “Emaan” in the pilot vehicle. They go as if the world is coming to an end. But in reality they are probably going to inaugurate some public toilet.

4. The self-proclaimed local

This person is the ultimate “local.” He will gladly tell you about the history of “Thirontharam” and how cool it was under the king’s rule. This person complains heavily about “Varuthanmar” a.k.a people from other districts who settle down in Trivandrum.

The self-proclaimed local has two rules

1. Nobody loves Trivandrum more than him
2. You can’t love Trivandrum unless you are born here.

5. The guy who always complains about Trivandrum but never leaves

Every Trivandrumite knows that one person who claims to hate being in Trivandrum but just keeps sticking around. He is here probably because he got a decent job or his parents got a transfer here. For him Trivandrum is too boring and whatever the reason, he will always be complaining. He wants us all to abandon our homes and relocate to the “only real metro city in the world”. But even if the world is coming to an end, even if there is a Tsunami coming, this person will never ever leave Trivandrum.

6. Techies

Techies are the life force of IT industry. It is estimated that around 47,000 IT professionals work in Technopark alone. You can only see them during the early hours of the morning when they wait for their bus. The anatomy of an IT professional is simple. They are all well-groomed, wear formals and always wear an ID card. Their language is also different from ours. If they say they want to go to the Park, they mean Technopark not your ordinary park. And if they say anything about clouds don’t look up, you will only look stupid. It’s not what you think it is.

7. The Photographers

Some of you are friends with them or some of your friends know them. A typical photographer’s day starts by heading out to the city searching for that perfect shot. And thanks to them you can enjoy some wonderful photos of Trivandrum. You can find them at social events like IFFKs and other cultural festivals. These guys are like ninjas, they can appear anywhere in split seconds and still manage to get a clear shot.Did we mention thatthey have excellent Photoshop skills too? Go ahead you can ask them to take your picture for your Facebook, they don’t mind at all.

8. The Clueless Tourists

Courtesy: DeccanChronicle

You can always tell first-time tourists in Trivandrum. They will wander aimlessly looking lost, probably because somebody showed them the wrong way when they asked for direction. The group tourists are the worst. They are noisy and get in everybody’s way. Just go to East Fort area. Everybody is searching for the ‘B-nilavara’. Obviously some street smart guide has conned them. They litter everywhere and when they leave there is a huge mess everywhere.

9. The Migrant Workers

Photo: thehindu

This is actually a state-wide phenomenon but we decided to include it here as you encounter them a lot. What Dubai is to us, it is Kerala for them. Gandhi Park at East Fort has now become the official meeting ground of the migrant workers, every morning and evening. They take up jobs that we Malayalees don’t like to do. They are everywhere.

So there you go, these are the types of people you might come across in your everyday life in Trivandrum. What did you think of our list? Did we miss any?
