{"id":23522,"date":"2015-06-23T14:01:21","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T08:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/?p=23522"},"modified":"2015-06-23T14:01:21","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T08:31:21","slug":"historic-varkala-ts-canal-to-be-revived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/historic-varkala-ts-canal-to-be-revived\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Varkala TS-Canal to be revived!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The historic waterway, the TS Canal and the two old tunnels on it will get a new lease of life as the state government cleared the project for the revival of the major waterway of erstwhile Travancore.<\/p>\n<p>Technical Sanction has given approval to revive the canal from Anchuthengu Kayal to Nadayara Kayal, a distance of 12.71 kilometres. The project has an estimated cost of Rs16 crore and the amount has been approved by the government.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21964 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2-638x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel 2\" width=\"638\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2-638x513.jpg 638w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-2.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 355-metre-long Chilakkoor tunnel is the second one that too will be renovated. Earlier it was planned to widen the canal and link this waterway with the National Waterway-3. However, the plan was dropped. While the present project does not intend to widen the tunnels, the inside lining would be toughened and the canals deepened. Concrete lining provided between 1934 and 1942 has peeled off at several places.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21963 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1-666x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel 1\" width=\"666\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1-666x513.jpg 666w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-1.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With this, the efforts to make the 722-metre Sivagiri tunnel, the 350-metre Chilakoor tunnel, and the 12.7-km waterways navigable have gathered momentum again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21962 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-659x513.jpg\" alt=\"Varkala Tunnel\" width=\"659\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel-659x513.jpg 659w, https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2015\/01\/Varkala-Tunnel.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tunnels and the 12.7-km waterways are part of the 60.5-km Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam section of the 560km Thiruvananthapuram \u2013 Shoranur canal (TS-Canal).
