On June 12, Letter of acceptance (LOA) was given to KNR Constructions by the NHAI to take up the road widening project. Unfortunately, no action has been taken by the state government to hand over the stretch for construction. The company has sent a notice asking why the stretch was not handed over to them more than a month after issuing LOA.<\/p>\n
The project was stuck on land acquisition for more than 40 years. Now, when it was finally approved, a set of new problems have surfaced.<\/p>\n
The PWD has not handed over the 26.5km stretch from Kazhakkoottam to Mukkola, after demarcating the stretch in 45-meter width. While the Kerala water authority (KWA) was asked to replace unused pipes on the stretch. More serious is the case of felling of trees. The social forestry department has not given permission to cut around 6,000 trees on the stretch yet.<\/p>\n
The project has to be completed in 24 months and\u00a0still government departments are asking for more time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Now PWD is saying that the revenue department must measure the land first as it was acquired more than 40 years ago. The NHAI officials said that they have informed KWA that their contractors will replace the pipeline if KWA could not complete it on time.<\/p>\n
The tree protection committee (TPC), which has environmentalists like B Sugathakumari and G Sankar as members, has asked for a week to conduct a joint inspection to take a list of number of trees that must be protected.<\/p>\n
The situation is very disappointing. The project has to be completed in 24 months and there is not even a single day to waste. But still government departments are asking for more time.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari that the state was lagging in terms of road development. And it seems like he is right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
