Ready for re-opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Priyadarshini Planetarium at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum which was closed for renovation work is almost ready for opening. Planetarium state-of-the-art projection system and tilted dome was shown off in all its glory, during a trial run.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is the biggest dome in south India and the first tilted dome with hybrid technology in the country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>State-of-the-art Projectors<\/h3>\n<p>The latest projectors can create an \u2018immersive effect\u2019 as it seamlessly integrates traditional opto-mechanical star projection and digital film projection, offering viewers a 3D experience. The videos are not just 3D but use most of our cone of vision, unlike a flat screen which uses just 3% of it. There are nine digital video F32 projectors with 2K resolution which will be controlled by computers to project a single 10 mega pixel visuals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23613\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23613\" class=\"wp-image-23613 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/files\/2015\/07\/Priyadarshini_Planetarium.jpg\" alt=\"The modernised Priyadarshini Planetarium at KSSTM. Photo Credits: B.P Deepu, New Indian Express<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Bigger Dome<\/h3>\n<p>A 17-metre diameter dome, designed by Astro Tech Inc. of the U.S., replaces the 15-metre diameter old dome at the planetarium. There is a 33% increase in area in the 4,900 sq ft new dome. The new dome has a 15 degree tilt, allowing viewers to the show without craning one\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p>According to KSSTM Director Arul Jerald Prakash, \u201c<em>It is the biggest dome in south India and the first tilted dome with hybrid technology in the country,<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>More seats<\/h3>\n<p>The number of seats has gone up from the 150 earlier to 240 and are arranged as in a gallery or a cinema. The revamp includes the best in comfy seats with more leg room. Tickets for those under 12 years come at Rs 30. The rest have to pay Rs 60.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During previous technology, changing shows meant the planetarium had to be closed for 3 days.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though the planetarium was inaugurated in September 1994, the old equipment here goes back to 1988. The old projector procured in 1987 from Goto Inc, Japan, is on display at KSSTM. In 2006, the company stopped producing spares. After many years, the planetarium had started developing problems. The shows were not the best and during previous technology, changing shows meant the planetarium had to be closed for 3 days.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the governing body of the museum decided to procure the latest equipment. Global tenders were invited and the tender was awarded to Carl Zeiss Company at a cost of Rs 12.5 Crore.<\/p>\n<p>Once the renovated planetarium is opened, it will offer astronomy shows, full-dome video shows, and digitally converted large format videos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Priyadarshini Planetarium at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum which was closed for renovation work is almost ready for opening.
