Technopark Trivandrum, country’s first IT Park, is gearing up to celebrate its silver jubilee in a grand way by organizing a series of programmes beginning on July 27.<\/p>\n

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will officially launch the month-long celebrations by unveiling the new logo of Technopark at a function to be held here.\u00a0 The main event, as part of the silver jubilee celebrations, will be held at the Amphitheatre near Park Centre on August 5.<\/p>\n

The celebration will conclude with the laying of the foundation stone for the largest IT building in the Phase-I campus of Technopark. As an extended series of events related to the celebration, a new Rs 2.5 crore solid waste management plant and security control room will be inaugurated next month.<\/p>\n

How it all began<\/h3>\n

The journey of Technopark began 25 years ago. The foundation stone for the first building in Technopark was laid on 31 July 1991 by the then Kerala Chief Minister, K. Karunakaran. Technopark was formally dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao in November 1995.<\/p>\n

Technopark owes its existence, in part, at least, to a 42-year-old Mexican woman, a factory worker at Apple in California. G.Vijayaraghavan, first CEO of Technopark explains “In 1990, Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar, Industries Minister K.R. Gowri Amma, and a team of officials, went to Silicon Valley and Standford University to study the possibility of setting up high-technology industries in the state. There we saw hundreds of women at work building computers with robots whizzing amidst them. Nayanar was mighty impressed when he learnt that the woman earned $12 an hour. Nayanar, who until then thought that computerisation would put an automatic end to jobs, immediately gave the green signal for the project. That trip to the United States was the turning point. ”<\/p>\n

It was acquired by Data Entry International, which in turn was taken over by Office Tiger, which eventually was acquired by RR Donnelly.<\/p>\n

The ripple effect<\/h3>\n

Technopark triggered Trivandrum’s metamorphosis from a sleeping town of government employees to a vibrant city of software companies. Technopark gave Trivandrum a new identity and put city’s name on the world IT map. Not only that, much of what\u2019s new in the city have something to do with the Technopark including improved flight connectivity, ever-increasing high-rise buildings, business hotels , late night buses and taxi services etc.<\/p>\n

From just five companies in the beginning, today Technopark is home to over 330 companies that employ over 47,000 people and provide indirect employment to some 2.5 lakh others. \u00a0Technopark houses many giant IT companies like Oracle Corporation, Infosys, TCS, along with Ernst & Young Global Shared Services Center, Allianz, RR Donnelley, UST Global, Tata Elxsi etc to name a few.<\/p>\n

Technopark also provides many opportunities for budding entrepreneurs. It serves as a cradle for start-ups in the state. Technopark\u2019s Technology Business Incubator has also supported and enabled start-ups and potential entrepreneurs to convert their innovative ideas into viable businesses<\/p>\n

Technopark – Phase III<\/p><\/div>\n

Technopark is currently on an expansion mode by adding another 37 hectares as part of Phase III expansion and 450 acres as Technocity\u2014an integrated IT township near Pallippuram. No doubt in the next 25 years, Technopark will foster the growth of the city into a megapolis.<\/p>\n
