Back in 2014, a project was launched to restore the heavily polluted Karamana and Killi rivers and salvage its ecology. The project called as the ‘Karamana-Killi River Scientific Management Project’ is being jointly implemented by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and TRIDA.<\/p>\n
According to KSCSTE, there are 13 sub-projects in the Karamana-Killi River Scientific Management project. A spill way with reinforced shutters has been fixed on either sides of the Thiruvallam canal.\u00a0 A pump house with 20 horse power pump set has been built. The rejuvenation project of Maruthankuzhi weir has been almost completed. A new bridge and a balikadavu has also been built.<\/p>\n
To prevent dumping of waste into the river, surveillance cameras has been installed in the stretch from Thiruvallam Bridge to Myladikkadavu Bridge. Keltron is in charge of the maintenance of the cameras. \u00a0Chain linked fencing will be erected on either sides of the eight bridges of Karamana River. A wall also will be built on either sides of the 10 bridges on Killi River also.\u00a0 Four Sewage lines will be built to prevent sewage inflow from houses into the Karamana and Killi River. Three new sewage pumps have been allotted to the Kuriathi sewage pumping station.<\/p>\n
To increase the flow of water in summer, a spill way has been constructed in Killi River.\u00a0 Besides, silt traps were built for drains which come to about 585 meter at Myladikkadavu. This work comes under the corporation. Measures were initiated to clean the Thekkenekkara canal.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Biodiversity Board aims to setup a butterfly-biodiversity park near the Karamana Bridge, which will be approximately around 300 meter.<\/p>\n
According to the project report, leachate from garbage dumps at Jagathy, Valiasala, and Iranimuttam are polluting the river. Discharge of untreated sewage, waste water from houses, schools, and community halls, disposal of poultry and slaughterhouse waste, waste water from dhobi ghats and encroachment of the river are the other major sources of pollution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
