(APSEZ) has some big plans for Vizhinjam Port.<\/p>\n<p>The profitability of the Vizhinjam International multipurpose Deepwater seaport lies in attracting cargo going to Colombo. The Adani hopes to divert Indian cargo going to Colombo and elsewhere for transhipment from feeder vessels to Vizhinjam and make it the mother port for Indian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Port figures shows that almost 60% of Colombo port&#8217;s annual container volume of 4.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit, a measure used for capacity in container transportation) comes from south Indian ports. Imagine if these cargo come to Vizhinjam instead of Colombo? Vizhinjam will surely become profitable. However, it will not take place overnight. Even if this plan fails, Vizhinjam can have a \u2018Plan-B\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The viability of Vizhinjam is hinged not on hinterland cargo but on the \u201crealignment\u201d of container traffic from Colombo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Adani Group have a significant role to play for the success of Vizhinjam. About 40 lakh containers carrying coal and other materials that reach Indian shores every year are for Adani Group. If Adani Group&#8217;s containers alone reach Vizhinjam, operational capacity of the harbour can be spiked to optimum levels without much effort and the port will be profitable.<\/p>\n<p>Building a port like Vizhinjam is a challenge. It needs constructing a breakwater in the outersea in Vizhinjam. A group having expertise and can take a risk of the initial losses will only be able to undertake this project. Adani Group have the necessary heavy machineries and dredgers for the construction of the project. Adani Ports &amp; SEZ is India\u2019s largest private multi-port operator who currently operates eight ports in India and four ports outside the country. Being a \u2018Greenfield port\u2019, it has the ability to deploy &#8220;best in class&#8221; equipment and can be highly mechanized to achieve world-class efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, our country&#8217;s economy is helping to pay for foreign ports like Colombo and Salalah and our imports are becoming more expensive. Unless and until we have a domestic deep-water transshipment terminal, Indian economy will remain less competitive compared to those of China and Singapore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd.
