As part of the second phase of Operation Anantha flood mitigation works, storm water drains in the city will be strengthened.<\/p>\n
The state government has sanctioned a sum of Rs.22 crore to implement the project. The second phase of the flood-mitigation works, including cleaning up and strengthening of Amayizhanjan canal, improving the condition of drain in front of bus stand at Thampanoor, and construction of canal and culvert around Ponnara Park were progressing fast.<\/p>\n
In its first phase, the eviction drive was carried out in a fast pace and strengthening storm water drains were not able to finish due to the nature of the work. District Collector said that the roads and drains, involved in the second phase of the work, were controlled by multiple government agencies and the work could be taken up only in coordination with all the agencies concerned and hence the delay.<\/p>\n
For example, the storm water drain works in East fort area needs joint involvement of four government agencies. The Kerala Sustainable Urban Development project was in charge of the construction of the drain from Pazhavangady temple to Abheda Ashram. From the Abheda Ashram to the Thekkenamkara canal, PWD executed the work. The Thekkenamcara canal came under the control of Major Irrigation Department.<\/p>\n
District Collector also said that the team had achieved its goals in removing encroachments along storm water drains which prevented flow of rainwater, resulting in flooding at the Thampanoor and East Fort areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
