In a bid to reduce commuter woes, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has decided to recommend the state government to increase the strength of city permit auto-rickshaws by almost six fold.<\/p>\n

The new recommendation comes after realizing the disproportion in the number of rickshaws and commuters. If the recommendation is accepted, around 30,000 auto-rickshaws will operate in Trivandrum. As of now, 4,550 autos have permits to ply in the city and these were given in 1995.\u00a0 Once the permission is received, the autos registered up to August 2011 will be considered on priority basis.<\/p>\n
Another decision is to implement colour code for auto-rickshaws with city permits from November 1. The autos having city permits would be painted in yellow colour in order to differentiate them from those without permits.<\/p>\n

This was owing to the allegation that rising number of atrocities were being reported by passengers who travelled in rickshaws without city permit. These auto-rickshaws without the permit mostly came from rural areas in the district. Once the colour code is implemented, it will be easy to identify unauthorized rickshaws and keep them out of the city. Though it has been decided to paint the autos yellow, the pattern is yet to be decided.<\/p>\n
