Thanks to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the narrow stretch of the Kanyakumari-Trivandrum Highway will be widened. The new decision provides a huge relief to both residents and tourists on either side of the border.<\/p>\n
NHAI will soon call for tenders to widen the 70Km stretch from Kanyakumari to Kaliyakavilai in Trivandrum. \u00a0The project will be laid on an engineering, procurement, construction basis with funding by the Government of India. The road is likely to cost Rs. 1,200 crore.<\/p>\n
Widening this stretch to NH standards will help Vizhinjam Port and its hinterland cargo significantly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Land acquisition for the project covering two roads \u2013 NH 47 (Kanyakumari to Trivandrum) and NH 47 B (Nagercoil to Kavalkinaru covering a distance of 16 kms) \u2014 is progressing well. Of the 26 villages, awards have been passed for 22 villages. The other remaining villages too will be taken up simultaneously. The NHAI has planned to form most of the road as a bypass so that land acquisition will be minimum.<\/p>\n
Trivandrum-Kanyakumari Road has not seen any development after Independence. Currently it will take 3 hours to travel from Marthandam to Trivandrum. Students always end up going late to colleges as most of the students in the area are from Kerala.\u00a0 Many residents in Kanyakumari and Nagercoil areas also depend on the Trivandrum Medical College and Regional Cancer Centre. Even ambulances get stuck in traffic pile-ups daily. Most of the interstate buses especially to Bangalore also goes through this stretch of road.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, 1st phase of Karamana-Kaliyakavilai is progressing fast. When the project is completed, people from both states can travel through the road very fast. That\u2019s not all, when the Vizhinjam Port Project is completed, there will be heavy movement of container trucks on this stretch.
