After four long years, Tagore Theatre has been finally opened to the public after renovation.<\/p>\n
The renovation of the complex was completed at a total cost of Rs 23.04 crore. Only the first phase of the renovation was completed and the second phase will begin soon. The project was carried out under the aegis of state government by making the Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation (KTDFC) the nodal agency.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the renovation includes setting up of three new screens with 2K projection, 4,000 square feet stage and centrally air-conditioned auditorium with acoustic facility. Apart from these there is also a state-of the-art high definition sound system. The older seats in the auditorium have been replaced with modern comfy seats. However, the seating capacity has come down to 925, though the project had earlier proposed a 1,200-seat facility.<\/p>\n

Tagore theatre also houses the biggest stage in India. The stage has an area of 380 metre square<\/strong> so that artists can perform without any space constraints. Modern green rooms and rest rooms are the other highlights.<\/p>\n
The second phase of the renovation includes a three-floor performing art block, a mini theatre, a gallery for paintings, sculptures, an open theatre for staging plays and art forms and an audio video production centre. Apart from these landscaping, gardening, cafeteria, painting gallery of Tagore, outdoor beautification will also be carried out in the second phase.<\/p>\n
The cultural complex was closed for renovation in 2011. But the work was stalled several times and dragged into controversies due to funding problem and sub-contracting issues. A total amount of Rs 24.60 crore<\/strong> had also been fixed as financial aid from the Centre.
