The liver transplant Unit coming up at Medical College Trivandrum is almost ready with 80% of the work completed.<\/p>\n
When it becomes functional, it will be the first hospital in the public sector to have a liver transplantation unit in Kerala. The unit is being setup in a record time of less than 18 months. However, it took 2 years after the announcement to materialize. In comparison, major hospitals in the state are said to have taken 2-4 years for setting up a similar unit.<\/p>\n

The setting up of the special ICU and supporting ICUs are progressing at a fast pace. The high-end equipments will be purchased through Kerala Medical Services Corporation Ltd (KMSCL). If in case of delay, the equipemts will be borrowed from KIMS.<\/p>\n
Recruitment of personnel is under way and the entire team would be set up within a short time. If the unit gets the right candidate, the transplantation surgery can be carried out anytime. The hospitals is currently preparing a list of patients who await a transplant and is also in search of possible donors.<\/p>\n

The training of the surgeons, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, nursing and other paramedical staff has already begun in association with KIMS, who has signed a MoU with Trivandrum Medical College. On a rotational basis staffs will be sent to training at a private hospital in Chennai.<\/p>\n
