Kerala Cabinet has sanctioned Rs.475 crore rehabilitation package to those who would be affected due to implementation of Vizhinjam Transhipment Terminal project. \u00a0A government order will be issued shortly.<\/p>\n
The package will hopefully solve the fears of coastal population regarding the social and economic fall-out of the project. The package, with schemes to address the grievances and apprehensions of the local community, has been designed to be implemented in five years.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that the project will affect nearly 3,000 of the 7,876 houses along the Panathura-Veli stretch.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The rehabilitation package is aimed at benefiting people whose livelihood means are centred within three kilometres of the port, including the shipping channel. Out of the total amount, Rs 350 crore is for land acquisition and house construction process, Rs 39 crore on women empowerment, Rs 24 crore on educational assistance, Rs 2.5 crore on geriatric care and Rs 50 lakh on capacity building.<\/p>\n
A sum of Rs 59 crore has been earmarked for providing livelihood equipment for the locals. This include buying 110 fishing boats, 1,000 units of safety equipment and finding jobs for 1000 fishermen. While the Rs.39 crore women empowerment will benefit 6,926 women on the Kollencode-Adimalathura stretch. Skill development of 3,000 young men and women and entrepreneurship promotion are also a part of this scheme.<\/p>\n
