It is reported that, NHAI officials have reached a consensus in this matter in a meeting held on Tuesday between the chief secretary and other stake holders.<\/p>\n
At least 10% of the trees can be retained as part of protecting the green cover.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
As per discussions a team of officials led by Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson will conduct a field inspection to decide on the number of trees that can be retained during road widening project. The NH is being widened to 45 meters.<\/p>\n
Around 4,700 trees on the stretch would have to be removed for road development. At least 10% of the trees can be retained as part of protecting the green cover. The inspection has been aimed at identifying such trees.<\/p>\n
The NHAI proposed to plant three times the number of trees that would have to be felled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
NHAI is also against relocation of big trees onto the medians which will be constructed. They said that only small plants are suitable for medians and huge trees will pose danger to motorists. Usually trees are not allowed on the median in any NH all over India.\u00a0 NHAI gave an exception in Kazhakootam-Mukkola NH bypass. The NHAI proposed to plant three times the number of trees that would have to be felled.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by Public Works Department secretary A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) chief general manager V.
