NHAI has begun axing of trees along the Kazhakkoottam-Mukkola stretch. Recently, the forest department has recently given consent to cut around 1,100 trees on 11km stretch starting from Kazhakkoottam.<\/p>\n

The NHAI is planning to complete tree felling in 15 days. However, the exact time required for cutting trees could be assessed only after two days. KNR Construction, the company in charge of the widening, has remitted Rs 18 lakh, to the treasury for cutting the trees. The amount was paid by the contractor in order to avoid delay in auction of trees.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the forest department has started assessment of estimate of trees on the next 10km stretch. It is estimated that around 4,200 trees will be axed and as many as 491 trees will be retained on the median. Trees will be retained near service corridor too.<\/p>\n

To compensate the loss, the social forestry department will plant around 40,000 saplings on 35 acres on the Sainik School campus, 10 acres near Kariavattom stadium and 5 acres on Kariavattom University campus.<\/p>\n

The issue of trees was the biggest hurdle faced the project. Many nature lovers objected to NHAI’s decision to axe all the trees. However NHAI said that, the land for widening the stretch was acquired more than 30 years ago, and more trees might have come up there since then. These trees on the stretch had started blooming only recently.<\/p>\n

Usually trees are not allowed on the median in any NH all over India.\u00a0 NHAI gave an exception in Kazhakootam-Mukkola NH bypass.<\/p>\n
