After a long wait of 24 years, Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport project is finally becoming a reality, giving a big boost to the development dreams of Trivandrum. Kerala’s dream project will be operational in three years.<\/p>\n
Chief minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for the proposed Rs 7,525-crore Vizhinjam port at a ground breaking ceremony held in Mukkola junction near Vizhinjam. Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari, Adani Group’s chairman Gautam Adani, Karan Adani, Sashi Tharoor MP, Ports Minister K Babu, ministers, MLAs and MPs, top government officials and many others were present in the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Adani Group promises to complete the project in just 1000 days.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
With formal inauguration over, the construction will enter into full swing and Adani Group has assured that it will complete the first phase of the project in less than 1000 days<\/strong>. Vizhinjam project which is materializing nearly a quarter century after the idea of such a port was first mooted in 1991, will be the biggest private investment in the state to date.<\/p>\n
Over the decades, the concept of \u2018Vizhinjam Port\u2019 underwent massive transformation. As per the current design, the port will be so massive that it can handle the biggest of the big ships, i.e. ships having a capacity of 18,000 TEU<\/strong>. Only few ports in the world can handle ships of that size and Vizhinjam port will be one of them.<\/p>\n
Pricing and Infrastructure will set Vizhinjam port apart<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Vizhinjam port will take on peers by pricing itself suitably in and providing the best infrastructure. \u201cShipping lines will have a major role, especially for Vizhinjam, since it is purely a transhipment terminal. Local cargo here is very little and the hinterland is very small. So it will be purely a \u2018lines-driven\u2019 game<\/em>\u201d said Karan Adani, Executive Director, Adani Ports and SEZ. As for the Adani Group, it has a string of ports across the Indian coast which enables it to give value to shipping lines in India.<\/p>\n
“There is no need to worry about the proposed Colachel port since there is enough cargo for everybody<\/em>” He added.<\/p>\n
Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari has announced relaxation in Cabotage Law for Vizhinjam. He said that official order will be released within 15 days.<\/p>\n
10 Million Tonne Break-even Point for Vizhinjam<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Adani Ports, has said that the port would need to handle ten million tonne of cargo to reach break-even. In shipping terms, ten million tonne of cargo is equivalent to about 8.5-9 lakh TEUs. In the last three decades, Sri Lanka has been able to establish a regional dominance in trans-shipment with the Colombo port. At present, nearly one million TEUs of Indian cargo is trans-shipped through foreign ports, including Colombo. Vizhinjam port is planned as an alternative for the same. Development of the Vizhinjam Port will help Indian traders save cost by transhipping containers at lower costs.<\/p>\n

The project faced many hurdles and sabotages at every step. There was even a point where we doubt if the port will be realised at all. But Vizhinjam has overcome all the hurdles and now after 24 years Vizhinjam Sea Port is becoming a reality.<\/p>\n
