The end of 2015 witnessed the first construction work for the much-awaited Vizhinjam International seaport project. The project site is busy with construction activity and the dredging is going on in full swing in the sea.<\/p>\n

However, 2016 would be an important year to the multi-crore project as the preliminary work on rail, road connectivity need to be completed next year. Also, the rehabilitation of people and the acquisition of the remaining 10% land for the project need to be completed by December 2016.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

The dredging of the sea bed is going on in full swing. Soon another dredger will arrive at the site to speed up the dredging process. As a result of dredging, sand bed is formed on the beach. Bull dozers are working continuously to level the beach. The project envisages the reclamation of 53 hectares of land in the sea for the project.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

Around 150 acre of land will be acquired for constructing rail link between Vizhinjam and Nemam. Already, the alignment for the 13km railway line has been prepared by the government. State government is trying to include the project under Central Government’s \u2018Sagar Mala project\u2019. However, Central Government is yet to take a decision on this matter. Once the Central government gives a green signal, land acquisition for the railway line can begin. The railway line is primarily for transporting containers and goods from the port.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

The construction of road from the port is also progressing as well. The road will be developed into international standards as heavy trucks carrying containers will ply through these roads when the port is commissioned. The road from current project site to old fishing harbor is also progressing. The land is being cleared and levelled using hi-tech machines.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the four laning of the 4.5Km Kovalam-Mukkola road is also progressing well. The construction of the road is carried out on the acquired land. Also the construction of a bridge at Kalluvettan Kuzhi has started. The bridge that span across two small hills will have a length of 150 meters and will have height of 24 meters. It will be the highest bridge in the by-pass.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

The work has started for constructing a parallel bridge at Thiruvallom. When the four-laning of Kazhakootam-Mukkola gets completed, it will offer easy access for the cargo movement from the Vizhinjam port.<\/p>\n

\"Vizhinjam.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation of traditional fishermen is expected to be completed in 2016. The government has set up a special cell under the district collector to handpick eligible beneficiaries from the host of applicants for rehabilitation package.<\/p>\n

Of the 220 acres to be acquired for the Vizhinjam project, the state government has already acquired 203 acres of land for the project. The rest has to be acquired by taking over a number of tourist resorts in Vizhinjam area.<\/p>\n
