These five planets will appear on a long diagonal in the dawn sky, provided the sky is clear.

Source: Astronomy Magazine

To observe them with better clarity, a special sky observation programme will be arranged for visitors on Saturday and Sunday at the Priyadarshini Planetarium in the city. KSSTM will be using two 11-inch telescopes at the planetarium so that the public can witness the rare celestial event.

Interested people have to get tokens from the planetarium office today itself (29-01-2016). Only 100 tokens will be issued on a first-come-first served basis and those visitors who have the tokens will be issued the tickets for the show. The tickets will be priced at Rs 60 each.

How it happens

The reason for the unusual sight is that Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be on the same side of the sun at the same time. Because all the planets sit on a single plane, and we’re looking at them from inside that plane, they will all appear to be sitting in a line.

For better viewing avoid areas with big city lights. It will be best to view on a higher plane with little or no obstructions from buildings and trees. The best time to watch the event is 45 minutes before sunrise.

Stargazers will get another chance to see the sight in August when all five planets will be together again, only this time on the other side of the sun, meaning they will be visible just after sunset rather than before sunrise. It will not happen again until 2018.

In a rare celestial spectacle, sky watchers will have an opportunity to see five planets adorning the sky together just before sunrise.
