Not long ago India Post was granted banking license by RBI. In an effort to improve the effectiveness of postal services, the government has decided to digitalize 1.5 lakh post offices across the country under the Digital India initiative. In this 1.3 lakh post offices has been included from the rural areas. The plans also include giving a radical makeover to the postman by equipping them with handheld devices which will help the rural people in financial services.<\/p>\n

The project which is expected to be accomplished by March 2017 has been allocated a fund of Rs 4,909 crore. Reports suggest that the digitalization process will be powered by the BharatNet project. Gramin Daak Sewak post offices have been given special importance in this initiative so that the benefits of Digital India reach out across the country. The other key plans include setting up a centralized data center, advanced disaster management and data recovery systems, connecting all post offices with intranet etc.<\/p>\n
