Santhi Kavadam the public crematorium at Thycaud will get a new electric cremator at a cost of Rs 54 lakh. This will increase the capacity of the facility to cremate up to 450 bodies a month. The city corporation had approved the proposal for a new cremator during the tenure of the previous council.<\/p>\n
At present, there are only two electric cremators and four wooden pyres. The new cremator will make sure that facility will run without interruption if some cremators are on maintenance and will not necessitate use of wooden pyres which consume more time.<\/p>\n
Normally, electric coils in cremators maintain temperatures of 650-1050 degrees celsius and bodies are burnt in an hour. With a malfunctioning coil, the cremation takes around 2-3 hours and when coils need to be replaced during maintenance, the cremators are run in turns.<\/p>\n
On an average day, 7-8 bodies are brought here for cremation. Although Santhi Kavadam, at present, can cremate up to 300 bodies in a month, the number has never touched 300 in the last 7 years since its installation. The maximum number of cremations carried out here in a month was 265. But many from rural suburbs – including Attingal, Kattakada and Neyyatinkara started using this facility. The new cremator would be able to help meet the demand and people won’t have to wait long.<\/p>\n
However, waste management is still a major concern for Santhi Kavadam. Earlier an electric incinerator had been planned to burn what remains after funerals. The project proposed in 2015, is yet to reach tender stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
