Mampazhakkalam, the annual mango fest and family expo is back in town.<\/p>\n<p>The Mango Fest which is currently taking place at Kanakakunnu Palace grounds features as many as 150 stalls, including those showcasing mangoes from across the country and various types of jackfruits. Around <strong>42 varieties of mangoes<\/strong> are available at the expo.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Around 42 varieties of mangoes are showcased through 150 stalls.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of the different variety of mangoes include Jehangir, Salem, Banglora, Desari and common varieties of Varikka, Nambiar, Kaappadi, Neelam, Farankiladuva, Chandrakaran, Kotturkonam, Chakkarakutti, Moovandan \u2018Sindhooram\u2019, \u2018Panchavarnam\u2019 and Kilichundan. And Himampasand, Aralika, Raspuri and Banganapalli are varieties from Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p>The mangoes were brought from Palakkad, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The stalls were being run by agents from Kerala and Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers have taken special care to ensure that chemically-treated, artificially-ripened mangoes are not showcased at the expo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cultivators are specifically instructed to use traditional methods of ripening such as covering them with stacks of hay. Pesticides are not used at all,\u201d says Gopakumar, coordinator of \u2018Mampazhakkalam.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Organizers have taken special care to ensure that chemically-treated, artificially-ripened mangoes are not showcased at the expo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Mango &amp; Honey products<\/h3>\n<p>Mango fest also features other products made using mangoes such as jams, halwas, and pickles. Mango and coconut saplings of different varieties could also be picked up here. The exhibition-cum-sale of honey and honey based products is also available here.<\/p>\n<h3>Games and other exhibitions<\/h3>\n<p>To make the expo more attractive, the fete includes special pavilions set up to display sculptures, rare artefacts and installations, and furniture sale. Various game shows and amusements have been arranged at the expo for children.<\/p>\n<p>A news photography exhibition organised by a collective of news photographers is a highlight of the expo.
