For the very first time in its history, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is embarking on never before space flight.<\/p>\n

This month, ISRO will begin the mission to launch its indigenous space shuttle which is made fully in India. The \u201cMade in India\u201d space shuttle is having a sleek winged body with almost the weight and size of a sports utility vehicle.<\/p>\n

As with almost everything related to the India space program, the vehicle and its launcher are being developed at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in Trivandrum.<\/p>\n

We will soon see witness the launch of the indigenously made Reusable Launch Vehicle – Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD). This will be the first time ISRO will launch a space craft, which actually has delta wings and after launch it will be glided back onto a virtual runway in the Bay of Bengal. The shuttle is being given final touches at Sriharikota awaiting the final countdown.<\/p>\n

During the test, the Indian space agency will fly the 1.75-tonne, reusable model to space and bring it down to the Bay of Bengal. In the first stage, solid fuel will power the 6.5 metre-long vehicle to reach some 70 kilometres into the atmosphere. Subsequently, it will begin the descent, which will be monitored by ships, satellites and radars. The craft will, however, not land on a runway.<\/p>\n

The test launch will be a significant milestone in ISRO\u2019s Reusable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstration Program.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although the test model is about six times smaller than the actual version, the launch will be a significant milestone in ISRO\u2019s Reusable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstration Program. The program, according to ISRO, is \u201ca series of technology demonstration missions that have been considered as a first step towards realising a Two Stage To Orbit (TSTO) fully reusable vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final version will take at least 10-15 years to get ready since designing a human rated reusable rocket is not a kid’s play.<\/p>\n

Aim is to bring down the launch cost<\/h3>\n

While NASA and other big players abandoned the idea of a winged reusable launch vehicle, Indian engineers think that the solution to reducing cost of launching satellites into orbit is to recycle the rocket or make it reusable. Scientists at ISRO believe that they could reduce the cost of launching stuff into space by as much as 10 times if reusable technology succeeds, bringing it down to $2,000 per kg.<\/p>\n

Other players in re-usable shuttle program<\/h3>\n

Between 1972 and 2011, NASA ran the \u201cSpace Transportation System\u201d programme that delivered five space shuttles for the US.\u00a0 The US retired the fleet in 2011.<\/p>\n

Current space shuttle programmes include those run by the European Space Agency, which has launched a prototype, and entrepreneurs like SpaceX founder Elon Musk who wants to put a reusable vehicle into space.
