A group of auto-rickshaw drivers in the city are giving free rides to patients going to Regional Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Meet Suresh Kumar M and his 23 member team of auto-rickshaw drivers at the Janamaitri auto stand near Pettah police station who gives free rides to RCC-bound patients.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So far they have made 192 free trips to Regional Cancer Centre.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It started as off as two free rides per day, then it became five. Now the auto-drivers offer free rides for all RCC-bound patients. It\u2019s been a year since they started this novel venture. The drivers also formed a trust titled \u2018Janamaithri auto drivers\u2019 koottayma\u2019 to help poor RCC patients.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26400\" style=\"width: 706px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26400\" class=\"wp-image-26400 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/files\/2016\/05\/Screenshot_1.png\" alt=\"The team, Source: Indian Express\" width=\"696\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The team, Source: New Indian Express<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cI lost my sister within one week of her getting diagnosed with cancer. We couldn\u2019t do anything then. I decided then that I would do something when I become older. When I discussed with my friends here about giving free rides, most of them were willing and thus we started this<\/em>,\u201d says Suresh to New Indian Express.<\/p>\n<p>A black board at their stand announces the names of the drivers who is ready to give free ride for the day. Five auto drivers are assigned the duty each day to ply the patients.\u00a0 These drivers will stay in the stand throughout the day. They won\u2019t even leave for a coffee break. The drivers will also record every ride in a small notebook. So far they have made 192 free trips to RCC. They have also kept a huge banner at the Pettah railway station displaying their phone numbers and announcing free rides for RCC-bound patients.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The drivers also formed a trust titled \u2018Janamaithri auto drivers\u2019 koottayma\u2019 to help poor RCC patients.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The only Janamaitri auto stand in the city is setting an awesome example with its well behaved drivers and their humanitarian activities. They are now planning to buy an ambulance to ply the patients. For Suresh and his team this is only a start.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the only auto-rickshaw drivers who provides this service. There are many other auto-rickshaw drivers who provides free ride to poor people.
