Though a liver transplant unit, with a host of sophisticated equipment and a special transplant intensive care unit, had been set up at Medical College last year itself, no matching donor-recipient pair had been found fit enough for the transplant surgery.

It was on Friday that Dhanish Mohan (21), son of Mohanraj at Parasuvakkal, Parassala, was brought to the critical care unit at MCH following an accident. Dhaneesh suffered serious injuries on his head after his head hit an electric post, while riding pillion with a friend on a motorbike. Though he remained in the CCU for two days, doctors confirmed brain death on Monday afternoon.

After obtaining permission to donate the organ from Dhanish’s family, who readily gave their willingness, Dr Sathyadas of the anaesthesia department prepared the donor for the surgery. The task of finding matching recipients for organs was taken up by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS), which coordinates the Government’s deceased donor organ donation programme, ‘Mrithasanjeevani.’ The name of Basheer of Perumathura was found to be the matching recipient on the list of patients registered and awaiting liver transplant under the Mrithasanjeevani programme.

The liver transplant surgery was performed by a team led by Ramesh Rajan, Head of Surgical Gastroenterology at MCH, along with Dr Bony Naresh, Dr Sindhu and liver transplant experts from KIMS Hospital, led by Dr Venugopal.

Patients in Kerala used to depend on private hospitals for liver transplantation. In the private sector, liver transplant surgeries cost anywhere from Rs.30 lakh to 40 lakh or upwards. The same procedure will be available to the public at affordable cost or free at Trivandrum Medical College. At present, only deceased donor liver transplants will be taken here.

Doctors has conducted the first deceased donor liver transplant surgery at the Trivandrum Medical College Doctors provided a new lease of life to Basheer a 60-year-old patient with end-stage liver through a liver donated from a young accident victim Dhanish Mohan who had been declared brain-dead.
